ANTIQUARIAN VIRGINIA LAW 13-VOLUME SET OWNED AND SIGNED BY JOHN LETCHER, William Waller Hening, The Statutes at Large; Being a Collection of all the Laws of Virginia, From the First Session of the Legislature, in the Year 1619. Mixed editions printed between 1810 and 1823, ten in Richmond, two in Philadelphia, and one in New York. Original matching full-leather bindings. All but Vol. 2 with signatures of John Letcher on the title page and front pastedown, most with signature also on the binding. Together with Casey, Personal Names in Hening's Statutes at Large of Virginia, and Shepherd's Continuation. Bridgewater, VA: 1933 reprint of the 1896 original, limited to 300 copies. Fourteen (14) pieces total.
Catalogue Note: John Letcher (1813-1884) was born in Lexington, Rockbridge Co., Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. He graduated from Washington College, now Washington and Lee University (W&L), with a law degree and opened a practice in Lexington in 1839. Letcher also worked as editor of the (Shenandoah) Valley Star newspaper from 1840 to 1850, as well as being actively involved with state politics. In 1860, he was elected Virginia's 34th Governor and served during the Civil War. After the war, Letcher served in the Virginia General Assembly and was active on the Board of Visitors of the Virginia Military Institute (VMI).

  • Condition:

    Good to very good overall condition, the interiors are mostly tight and show typical toning and scattered foxing; Vol. 9 has insect damage to the edges of the pages. The bindings show typical wear, rubbing, and cracking; all hinges are intact, Vols. 2, 11, and 12 spines with losses.
