Ultra Rare Well-Documented Vietnam War Experimental Prototype U.S. Remington Model 1100/Model 7180 Mark 1 Semi-Automatic Trench Shotgun with Bayonet, Formerly of the Remington Factory Museum Collection Manufactured c. 1966-1967. Offered here is one of the most elusive of all the U.S. military trench shotguns: a Vietnam War experimental prototype parkerized Remington Model 7180 Mark 1 semi-automatic trench shotgun made to accept the same bayonet as the M16 rifle, formerly part of the Remington factory museum collection. This is the only example in this specific configuration that we at Rock Island Auction Company have ever offered at auction. These Remington Model 1100 trench pattern shotguns in semi-automatic form are formally referred to as the Model 7180 Military, and a fully automatic version also developed around the same time was referred to as the Model 7188 Military, in which the 7188s have a visible selector switch. The M16 rifle was deployed for widespread issue in Vietnam starting in 1965, and used the then new M7 pattern bayonet in place of the outdated M1917 pattern bayonets still in military service, to which Remington diverted their attention to the development of military shotguns that could accept the newer bayonet and created what is known as the Mark 1 variants. In mid-1966, the U.S. Marine Corps announced their requirement for a modern fighting shotgun with jungle warfare and security characteristics, to which Remington submitted a Model 7180 Mark 1, a Model 7188 Mark 1, and an early Model 870 Mark 1, all capable of mounting the M7 bayonet, for testing at the Marine Corps Landing Force Development Center at Quantico; it is possible this very gun may have been one of those test subjects considering it was retained by the Remington Arms company. A handful of these Model 7180 Mark 1 and 7188 Mark 1 shotguns were carried live in the field by the U.S. Navy SEALs in the Vietnam War starting in early 1967 and the Model 870 Mark 1 shotgun was adopted in 1969 by the U.S. Marine Corps. Users in the field found the Model 7188 was difficult to control in fully automatic mode, to which fully automatic mode would be used in more of a last resort role, but would continue to carry a small handful of the shotguns throughout the Vietnam War. Surviving examples of these shotguns in any form are virtually non-existent with collectors today. A period photograph of a U.S. Navy SEAL in Vietnam wearing a sporting type vest full of extra shells and carrying a Model 7180/7188 Mark 1 type shotgun is shown on page 143 of "Weapons of the Navy Seals" by Kevin Dockery. This exact shotgun offered is pictured on page 334 of the book "The World's Fighting Shotguns, Volume IV" by Thomas F. Swearengen, able to be identified by its distinctive stock grain patterns, and information on the prototype Remington Model 1100 military shotguns can be found on pages 248-249 and 327-339. A different type of blue finished experimental prototype Remington Model 7180 Military trench shotgun that accepts an M1917 pattern bayonet was recently sold by our company in the May 2026 Premier for $58,750 price realized (lot 1279), and it is also pictured in Swearengen's book on page 331. This Model 7180 Mark 1 has a striking appearance that means business, featuring a parkerized finish on the main components, a 20 inch barrel with choke marked full, a prototype bayonet adapter assembly with heat shield having five rows of vent holes, a black painted beaded brass front sight on a ramped base, bayonet lug for use with the included M7 bayonet, a seven round capacity tube magazine, adjustable rear sight, black oxide finished bolt, anodized trigger housing, and smooth oil finished walnut furniture with a factory rubber recoil pad. "Remington Model-1100" and "519958V" marked on the left side of the receiver with the standard production type engraving on the sides. The underside of the forearm has an affixed black label numbered "A23". Includes an Imperial U.S. M7 bayonet with olive drab green synthetic M8A1 scabbard, and an accompanying red inventory tag from the Remington collection listing the gun by serial number. Note: This item features a high-capacity magazine and cannot be sold or transferred to individuals in states where semi-automatic shotgun capacity is limited which includes IL, MA, NY, NJ, and RI. Please check your local laws and regulations prior to bidding.
