WINFIELD SCOTT AND BENJAMIN F. BUTLER
(1786 - 1866) Soldier and military tactician who gained prominence as a national hero during the War of 1812. He succeeded to the command of the U.S. Army in 1841 and was hailed as the greatest military leader of his time following his handling of the Mexican War. A.L.S. penned on a folding letter cover, 2pp. 8vo., [n.p.], Apr. 3, 1843. Scott offers a very lengthy comment on the Engineer Corps troops being employed in repairing or improving civilian works in St. Augustine, Florida, stating that they must be placed exclusively under army engineers control. He further notes that troops may have to be turned out into uncompleted works in times of danger, as is the case at Fort Adams and Fort Monroe. Also signed by Gen. THOMAS H. JESSUP (1788-1860). The cover refers to a 'Special Order No. 20' and may have contained another document as well. Near fine. SOLD WITH: BENJAMIN F. BUTLER (1818 - 1893) Union major general, called 'The Beast' for his authoritarian control of occupied New Orleans. Later in the war, he commanded the Army of the James. Envelope sent to Butler and the forwarded along by him: 'Referred to General Marston for his examination & information Benj. F. Butler'. Very good. Two pieces.
