JOHN BURT AMERICAN SILVER PORRINGER
Boston, Circa 1724
Pierced handle engraved "Donum Pupillorum 1724" (the gift of pupils).

  • Provenance:
    Kaja Veilleux, Newcastle, Maine.
The Collection of Nancy & Larry Dickson.

    Notes:
The Burts, along with the Edwards, Reveres and Hurds, were among the four major silversmithing families in 18th Century Boston. John Burt (circa 1692-1745) was joined in the trade by his three sons, only one of whom, Benjamin, lived long enough to have produced a substantial output.

It is believed John Burt was probably apprenticed when he was about 12 and established himself as a craftsman with his own mark at about 21. He held a number of minor civic offices but very little else is known about his personal life.
  • Dimensions: Approx. 7.4 troy oz.
  • Condition: Two engraved initials to sides: one reads "P.C.B., 1894", the other "G, 1842". One very minor dent to side that can be more felt than seen.

The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects. All items may have normal signs of age and wear commensurate with their age; these issues will likely not be mentioned in the condition report. Please contact Eldred's before the auction with any condition questions. Questions about condition will not be answered after purchase. Condition reports are provided as a courtesy, and we are not responsible for any errors or omissions. Important note on frames: Frames are not guaranteed to be in the same condition as they are in the item photograph. Due to handling and shipping, many frames, especially antique ones, are prone to losses. If you have questions about the condition of a frame, please contact us prior to the auction.
