ENTENTE SOLDIERS' ORIGINAL SKETCHES (2)
An exceptional pair of original sketches executed in the field, both depicting and presumably drawn by solders of the Entente, includes: an 8.5 x 11.25 in. pencil and charcoal sketch depicting a British soldier attending to a captured and presumably wounded German with his head resting on his pack, his pickelhaube helmet and rifle resting by his side, with barbed-wire fortifications in the background. The sketch is signed in black ink at bottom left, illegible but possibly reading ‘Adam Sawyer', with the date ‘27/9/18'. Shows folds with chips at the edges and a 1 in. tear near center, still in very good condition. WITH: a humorous 5.5 x 7 in. pencil sketch depicting an American doughboy attempting to ride a listless horse while consulting a French-English phrasebook. The drawing is titled ‘Difficulties of Lyman L. Jones in France' at bottom left, and is signed just above by the artist ‘N E Padgett', with the date ‘10-13-18'. The verso of the piece bears a note in black ink, presumably written by the subject, describing the scene: ‘One of the ‘Bucks' drew this picture. The occasion was an attempt to ride an exceptionally sleepy horse. At any rate it is pretty good and I think worthy of your criticism. I hope you will not think I have this trouble all the time.' Shows a horizontal fold, with pin holes to the corners, else very good. Two pieces.
