A superb Chinese Export hand-carved camphor wood blanket chest, masterfully executed with deeply sculpted relief decoration depicting idyllic village scenes framed by luxuriant floral borders. Crafted from seasoned camphor wood by skilled Chinese artisans, the chest exemplifies the exceptional workmanship and decorative artistry that made these pieces highly sought after during the mid-20th century. Every visible surface is richly hand carved. The hinged lid presents an elaborate landscape featuring traditional pavilions, bridges, and figures engaged in daily life, while the front panel centers on an oval reserve depicting elegantly dressed figures in conversation within a landscaped courtyard. The composition is enclosed by an exuberant border of stylized blossoms and foliage carved in deep relief, creating remarkable depth and visual texture. The interior retains its original retailer's label reading: "Chinese Hand Carved Chest – Made expressly for A.R. Scarsi & Co., Furniture & Rugs, 324 Stockton Street, San Francisco, California – Skilled Native Artisans using Seasoned Camphorwood." This original label significantly enhances both authenticity and provenance. Camphor wood has long been prized not only for its beautiful warm golden grain but also for its naturally aromatic qualities, traditionally used to protect textiles, linens, and heirlooms from insects and moisture. These handcrafted chests became highly desirable imports during the twentieth century and remain among the finest examples of decorative Asian export furniture. Raised on carved bracket feet and fitted with an ornate engraved brass hasp, the chest offers generous storage while serving as an exceptional decorative centerpiece suitable for traditional, eclectic, or Asian-inspired interiors. A beautifully preserved example retaining outstanding carving, original hardware, and documented San Francisco retail provenance.

  • Provenance: Originally retailed by A.R. Scarsi & Co., 324 Stockton Street, San Francisco, California, as indicated by the original interior retailer's label. Private Collection.
  • Literature: Comparable examples illustrated in publications on Chinese Export furniture and camphor wood chests, including works covering mid-century export carving traditions and American importers of Chinese decorative furnishings.
  • Circa: Mid-20th Century, circa 1950s–1970s.
  • Condition: Very good vintage condition. Structurally sound with attractive warm patina throughout. Original brass hardware and retailer's label retained. Minor surface wear, scattered small scratches, and light handling marks consistent with age and use. Interior is clean with expected age-related wear. Overall presents exceptionally well.
