Three U.S. World War II Military Aviation Patches All three patches are embroidered. 1) 434th Fighter Squadron patch, 4" wide patterned after a Jack of Hearts playing card with horseheads and "TUTOR ET ULTOR" (Protect and Avenge) ribbon. Operating a mix of P-38 Lightning and P-51 Mustang fighters, the 434th was originally tasked with West Coast defense before moving to Britain for bomber escort duty, also engaging in ground attack duty in support of the Normandy Landing, St. Lo, Market Garden and the Battle of the Bulge. An attached note describes the patch as English made. 2) 72nd Fighter Squadron patch, 6" wide triangle featuring a Disney-style stereotypical indian with stone tomahawk, bow and prominent feather sticking out the top of the triangle. Established as a defensive interceptor force in Hawaii in 1941, the 72nd was at Wheeler Field during the Attack at Pearl Harbor, suffering serious damage and casualties in the attack. After a rebuilding period acting as a training and reconnaissance squadron, the 72nd returned to action flying P-39 Airacobras and P-51 Mustangs on bomber escort and ground attack duty in support of the "island hopping" Pacific campaign. 3) 707th Bombardment Squadron patch, 5" diameter round, featuring a devil carrying a bomb. Activated in 1943 and stationed in England, the 707th participated in the Army Air Force's daylight bombardment of industrial targets, and provided support for D-Day, Caen, St. Lo, Market Garden and the Battle of the Bulge.
