An elegant Chinese cinnabar-style carved red lacquer bottle vase of classic baluster form, featuring a gracefully elongated neck rising from a rounded body richly decorated with deeply carved floral medallions and scrolling foliate motifs. Executed in the traditional style of carved cinnabar lacquer, the vase displays an intricate network of stylized arabesques surrounding large blooming peonies, symbols of prosperity, honor, and beauty within Chinese decorative arts. The body is finely carved with layered relief over a geometric diaper ground, while the neck is adorned with continuous scrolling ornament that complements the overall symmetry of the design. The striking vermilion-red finish contrasts beautifully with the dark recesses of the carving, emphasizing the depth and complexity of the decoration. The underside reveals a cobalt-blue glazed base enclosed within a foot ring, a feature commonly found on decorative Chinese export lacquer wares of the late 20th century. While inspired by centuries-old carved cinnabar traditions dating to the Ming and Qing dynasties, examples such as this were produced for the decorative arts market and remain highly desirable for their craftsmanship and dramatic visual appeal. An attractive decorative object equally suited for display as a standalone work or as part of a collection of Asian decorative arts.

  • Literature: Carved cinnabar lacquerware originated in China during the Song Dynasty and flourished under the Ming and Qing dynasties. Decorative export examples inspired by these historic techniques became increasingly popular during the second half of the 20th century and continue to be collected for their elaborate carving and vibrant coloration.
  • Circa: Late 20th century, circa 1970s–1990s.
  • Condition: Overall very good decorative condition. Minor surface wear and light handling marks consistent with age and use. No obvious cracks, repairs, or significant losses visible from the provided photographs. Base with expected shelf wear. Examination under UV light and out of the frame/base not performed.
