Emile Fuchs for Cartier, H.J. Heinz commemorative spoon, American, early 20th century 6.75 inches. Approximately 2.23 ozt. Figural top depicting a mother and child. Engraved on the back Hilda Lane Gordy, dated March 17, 1926. A very scarce antique Cartier Sterling silver spoon with "Mother and Child" finial designed and signed by sculptor, Emil Fuchs. Inside the bowl is a portrait of Henry James Heinz (1844 - 1919) founder of the famous H.J. Heinz Company and creator of Heinz tomato ketchup. H.J. Heinz "originated the happy custom of giving to the parents in his employ a silver spoon, whenever the stork visits their household." - George F. Redmont (editor) Financial Giants of America. Following the death of H.J. Heinz in 1919, this practice was continued by his son Howard Covode Heinz (1877 - 1941). Emil Fuchs (1866 - 1929) renowned sculptor, medalist and painter, designed the spoon for H.J. Heinz. The spoon was manufactured and sold exclusively by Cartier. In 1921, this spoon is illustrated in a catalog titled "The Works of Emil Fuchs: Illustrating Some of his Representative Paintings, Sculpture, Medals, and Studies". In this catalog the spoon is specifically identified as a "Birthday Spoon." On the finial of the spoon is a miniature cast sculpture of a mother, seated on a stool and holding her child in her lap. This miniature sculpture is identified in the Cartier catalog as "Mother and Child" and is based on Fuchs' bas-relief sculpture on the same subject.
