ATLANTA, GEORGIA OWNED STERLING SILVER EYEGLASSES CASE WITH SPECTACLES / EYEGLASSES, sterling case with engraved and chased foliate decoration, hinged lid with center reserve containing a personalized engraving of "J.S. Akers / Atlanta / Ga.", interior base with velvet lining, holding a pair of spectacles / eyeglasses with oval glass lenses and a gold wire frame that tested between 10K and 14K gold fineness though probably just heavy rolled gold-plated / gold-filled. Case marked "STERLING SILVER" along edge of base, spectacles unmarked and tested. Total weight of case with non-silver components: 3.075 ozt. Late 19th/early 20th century. Case 4 7/8" x 2" x 5/8" OA.
Catalogue Note: J.S. Akers is possibly identified as James Samuel Akers (1856-1923), who was born in Troup, GA to parents John William Akers (1828-1910) and Annie Elizabeth McGinty (1831-1913). James was living in Atlanta, GA by the time he married Eliza Coffin Bowie (1860-1938) on December 14, 1882. He was a cotton broker, working for the Inman company and became a partner in 1896. The company changed its name to Inman, Akers & Inman in 1903 until Aker's retirement in 1915. He also served as the first treasurer and a member of the Board of Trustees for Georgia Institute of Technology.

  • Condition:

    Case in mostly very good overall condition with some wear, surface scratches, and nicks, a few areas of heavier scratches, some denting mostly being minute / small in size, lid with a short split at edge at hinge, interior lining with discoloration and wear; spectacles in good condition with wear and bending.
