'MEIN KAMPF' FIRST EDITIONS, VOLUME I & II
Very rare first edition printings of Adolf Hitler's political manifesto, 'Mein Kampf', released in 1925 and 1926. The book outlines many of Hitler's political beliefs, his political ideology and future plans for Germany and the world. Volume I of 'Mein Kampf' was published in 1925, with Volume 2 following in 1926. Hitler began the work while imprisoned following his failed coup in Munich in November 1923. Although he received many visitors initially, he soon devoted himself entirely to the book. The first volume, bound in hard red covers with a white spine, was published in 1925 in Munich by Verlag Franz Eher, a firm that in future years would be given a huge number of printing contracts by the NSDAP. The volume is 392pp. 8vo., with multiple pages promoting the NSDAP and attacking Jews in the appendix. Hitler appears in a frontis portrait, the only time this image would ever be used. The book is in fine condition, the corners of the covers and ends of the spine bumped and slightly frayed in a few places, with some slight soiling as well. An ownership signature appears on the front pastedown, dated 1925. Contents are very fine. Volume II, also present, was published in 1926, again by Verlag Franz Eher in Munich. It contains 354pp. 8vo., with only one advertisement (for the first volume of 'Mein Kampf'), and is bound in red cloth with white titles on the cover and spine. There is light wear to the ends of the spine, which itself is quite sunned with wear to the title thereon. One penciled number appears on a blank flyleaf, otherwise very good. It could easily be argued that 'Mein Kampf' was one of the most influential books of the Twentieth Century. In it, Hitler made clear his hatred of what he believed to be the world's two evils: communism and Judaism. He blamed Germany's chief woes on the parliament of the Weimar Republic, the Jews, and Social Democrats, as well as Marxists, though he believed that Marxists, Social Democrats, and the parliament were all working for Jewish interests. He announced that he wanted to destroy the parliamentary system completely, believing it to be corrupt in principle, as those who reach power are inherent opportunists. Despite its weak early sales, the book soon became an enormous best-seller, enriching Hitler. It was even given to every couple getting married by the local burgermeister. Yet despite the warning contained in the text, the world ignored the threat laid before it.
