JOHN A. DIX
(1798 - 1879) Union major general most remembered for his threat to shoot anyone hauling down the American flag, and his suppression of the bloody New York draft riots. A.L.S. on mourning letterhead, 1p. 12mo., New York, Feb. [n.d.], 1854, to the editor of the Highland Eagle, suspending his subscription to the paper during an upcoming absence. He signs boldly in black ink at the conclusion. Shows original mailing folds, else fine. SOLD WITH: an intriguing war-date manuscript note, 1p. oblong 8vo., Fortress Monroe, Sep. 2, 1862, to fellow general William H. Emory, in full: ‘If the depredators can be found they should be sent here.' The note has been drafted by an aide, who also signs for Dix at the conclusion. Shows original mailing folds, slightly ragged at the edges, else very good. Two pieces.
