Well-Documented Mauser SS/Deutsches Reichspost Standard Model Bolt Action Short Rail Sniper Rifle with Scope This rifle can be seen on pages 22 through 24 of "Backbone of the Wehrmacht Volume II: Sniper Variations of the German K98k Rifle" by Richard Law, where it is presented as "a typical Mauser Gewehr fur Deutsches Reichspost" rifle, converted to sniper configuration after 1933. These rifles were originally acquired by the German government on the pretext of being used by postal authorities to protect mail shipments, but were typically seconded to paramilitary organizations like the SA; in turn, the SS would inherit many of these weapons following the purging of the SA in the Night of the Long Knives, and while the service use of this rifle is unrecorded it would have been among the weapons available to the SS at the start of open hostilities for World War II. Blade front and tangent rear sights, with a set of matching numbers on the barrel and receiver, Mauser "banner" over "1934" on the receiver ring, and a M.S.W. Wetzlar 4x81 scope mounted via a short rail "type 2/3" base secured with three screws and three pins. Installed in a smooth hardwood stock, with additional matching numbers on the trigger guard and floorplate, "Ch.d.A." stamp (indicating the "Chef des Ausbildungswesens", head of an early training organization within the Third Reich) on the left side, and a steel buttplate.
