FRENCH MINISTERS OF WAR
A group of three pieces signed by Ministers of War during the 1860s in France. Includes two pieces by French Marshal JEAN-BAPTISTE PHILBERT VAILLANT (1790-1872) who served in the Russian campaign of 1812 and the next year became a prisoner of war after the Battle of Kulm. During the Hundred Days, Vaillant fought at Ligny and Waterloo, and was made Minister of War, serving throughout the Crimean War (1853-1856). The first, an A.L.S. signed with initials, 1p. 8vo., [Paris?], May 9, 1855, penned on his official blue letterhead to an unidentified correspondent, in part: ‘…Decided to send the named individual to Algiers. He has been paid; he will leave…May 10th…And moreover, what will he do there! Has he been summoned to Algiers? Is it for studies or for business? I have no information in this matter…'. Tear at integral address leaf, remnants of red wax seal thereat, overall very good. WITH: a partly-printed manuscript D.S. ‘Vaillant', 1p. legal folio, Paris, Sept. 23, 1855, a military promotion on his Minister of War letterhead of M. Faure from second lieutenant to lieutenant in the first regiment of the infantry of the Imperial Guard. Central fold and light soiling, very good. Together with JACQUES LOUIS RANDON (1795-1871) Marshal of France and soldier who saw action in the battles of Lutzen and Leipzig, later Minister of War from 1859-1867. Partly-printed D.S. ‘Randon' 1p. legal folio, Paris, July 21, 1862, a military promotion on Minister of War letterhead for M. Faure from lieutenant to captain of an infantry regiment in the Imperial Guard. Light soiling to edges and additional folds, else very good. Three pieces.
