WORLD WAR II FRENCH COLLABORATIONIST ARTICLES
Three manuscript documents, 8pp. 8vo. in all, penned by an unidentified writer for publication in the influential French far right newspaper ‘Candide', October-November, 1939. ‘Candide' was published by Fayard in Paris from 1924-1944 and contained polemical articles representing its anti-Semitic, anti-communist and anti-democratic reviews, while simultaneously showcasing its support of Italian fascism. The editorials included in this lot espouse this radicalism, with one bearing content on the perceived unrest in the Third Reich, part: ‘…Hitler is on a pedestal. Will he still be there in six months? The story of the Munich assassination attempt is a sign. Whether there is a conspiracy of discontented Nazis, or a police machination, the fact remains…it is because an anti-Hitler spirit already exists…Hitler had always said he was the opposite of democracy…but this elective regime…is even more brutally changeable…In the shadow waits the Reichswehr. It first served Hitler. Then it endured him. But it will not always leave to a corporal, a former house painter, the destiny of Germany…'. Another article questions the role of prophets and adds an anecdote about the 1907 Hague Conference: ‘…considered that it had achieved a significant result by deciding henceforth there would be no war without prior declaration. A very perceptive…Chinese delegate expressed the desire to ask a small question…what would happen if war were declared on him and he did not wish to declare it himself? ‘You would be obliged to defend yourself,' he was told. ‘I understand', replied the Chinese delegate, ‘nothing has changed'. It was a wise man who has some understanding of how the world works…'. The third manuscript concerns itself with the question of ‘What is Hitler going to do?...Hitler is accustomed to appearing before the Reichstag when he has suffered a setback or a failure. The Fuhrer then comes to seek before the assembly a certificate of innocence…but he never reveals the substance of things. The only speech of value he could have made to the Chancellery…would have been…as follows: ‘Germans, I have misled you and I have led you down a road that ends in an abyss…I believed that England and France would not resist…'. Much more. Offered with several period newspaper clippings and two typed transcriptions as well as an A.L.S. from an unknown writer to far Right politician JACQUES BENOIST-MECHIN regarding the translation of Mein Kampf. Rusted pins hold the manuscripts together, else good condition.
