Mali, . Antelope mask, likely danced as a kamalen sogo koun, carved with long vertical horns, large circular eye apertures, and an elongated snout. Bas-relief bands across the forehead and along the snout. The light brown-tan surface bears a dry, desiccated patina, conveying considerable age. Short ears at base of horns lost, hairline age cracks. Old collection number on back “64.1119”. Custom base.

''Kamalen sogo' means 'the animal of young men' and the headdress is danced by members of the Tonw youth association, who sing the praises of the mask, comparing it to silver, gold, and other tokens of wealth and status. Like a chi-wara, the kamalen sogo koun stresses the virility and agricultural skills of young men as they complete the educational cycle of Bamana initiation, and prepare to take wives and settle into family life.' (Cf. Nooter Roberts & Roberts). Size: 30.75”H (78.1cm).

Provenance: Collection of Dr. Oliver Cobb, WA.
