Alfred Stieglitz
American, 1864-1946
November Days
Platinum print
Signed and dated 1886 in pencil lower right of the image. Horse-drawn carriage on a tree lined road near Munich, Bavaria (Germany), matted and framed.

Born in Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1864 during the Civil War, Alfred Stieglitz began the practice of photography while a student in Berlin in the 1880s, studying under the renowned photochemist Hermann Wilhelm Vogel. He returned to the United States in 1890 with a drive to establish photography as a recognized form of art in America. In 1902, he formed the Photo-Secession, an organization of photographers committed to establishing the artistic merit of photography. Through his several galleries and his publication, "Camera Work", Steiglitz introduced many photographers to the American public. In 1936, he even hosted Ansel Adams for a solo exhibition at his New York gallery, An American Place. Stieglitz early photographs were Pictorialist in style. His late work focused in depth on a few subjects, including New York City, the cloud studies that he called "Equivalents," and a portrait series of his wife, the painter Georgia O'Keeffe. By the time ill health forced Stieglitz to stop photographing in 1937, photography and the public's perception of it had changed dramatically, as a result of his immense influence.
