CHRISTO
New York/Bulgaria, 1935-2020
Collage for "Running Fence / Project for West Coast in USA [...]", 1972.

Signed, titled and dated upper left "Christo 1972 Running Fence / Project for West Coast in USA". Further annotated for materials, measurements and structural elements along upper edge and in various spots throughout the collage.

  • Provenance:
This piece comes to us from the widow of the late actor Kevin McCarthy. McCarthy was friends with Christo and worked on "Running Fence" with him. He purchased this directly from Christo, in its original Plexi case, after the completion of the project in the mid-1970s. Christo and his partner, Jeanne-Claude, remained friends with Kevin McCarthy and eventually his wife, Kate. They had dinner parties together and such. This is one of the pieces the late actor purchased over their years of friendship.

    Notes:
"Running Fence" was an 18-foot high white nylon fence that stretched more than 24 miles east-west near Freeway 101, north of San Francisco, on the private properties of 59 ranchers. It followed the rolling hills and dropped down to the Pacific Ocean at Bodega Bay. Christo and Jeanne-Claude began planning the project in 1972 and completed it September 10, 1976.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude were interested in a project that involved the life of people from the ocean to the urban and rural parts of California in relation to man-made structures. To them, the fence embodied larger issues of human freedom and constraint. "Running Fence" consisted of 42 months of collaborative efforts, the ranchers' participation, 18 public hearings, three sessions at the Superior Courts of California, the drafting of a 450-page Environmental Impact Report (the first of its kind) and the temporary use of the hills, the sky and the ocean. Every part of the project's structure was designed for complete removal, and no visible evidence of "Running Fence" remains on the hills of Sonoma and Marin Counties. The removal of "Running Fence" started just 14 days after its completion and all materials were given to the ranchers.
  • Dimensions: Pencil, colored pencil, watercolor, fabric, card, gouache and staples on paper laid onto board, 22" x 28". Framed 22.25" x 28.25".
