This hand-colored lithograph titled Battle of Buena Vista was published by Nathaniel Currier in 1847. The scene depicts the namesake battle of the Mexican-American War fought on February 23, 1847. The composition shows the American forces under General Zachary Taylor on the left engaged in close-quarters combat with the Mexican army on the right. Figures are depicted in period military uniforms with infantry carrying bayonets and officers on horseback. The print includes extensive text in the lower margin. Centered below the image is the title BATTLE OF BUENA VISTA followed by FOUGHT FEBY 23d 1847 and the line In which the American Army under Genl. Taylor were completely Victorious. The lower left corner lists American Army 4,500 men and Mexican Army 20,000 men. The lower right corner lists American Loss - 264 Killed, 450 Wounded, 26 Missing and Mexican Loss estimated in Killed & Wounded - 4,000 men. Publication credits are visible at the bottom including PUB. BY N. CURRIER at the left and 152 NASSAU ST. COR. OF SPRUCE N.Y. at the right. A copyright line reads Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1847 by N. Currier in the Clerk's office of the District Court of the Southern District of N.Y. The work is housed in a mahogany-finished wood frame with a cove-molded profile. The reverse has a paper backing with a circular gallery label from Clossonís Cincinnati and a handwritten inventory number D-2041-Shf.
