MAX WEYL
WASHINGTON DC, 1837-1914
(POTOMAC) MARSHLANDS WITH US CAPITOL
Oil on canvas
Lower right inscribed and signed and dated: To dear Leda Pinkham / Max Weyl

Catalogue note: Max Weyl is considered the most important landscape painter of the Washington, D.C. Landscape School and was often called the "American Daubigny," referring to the famous French landscape artist Charles-François Daubigny.

Predominantly self-taught, Weyl began selling his paintings to the Washington Star newspaper owner Samuel H. Kaufmann in the 1870s. Kaufmann encouraged Weyl to travel to Europe to develop his understanding of landscape painting. Upon his return, Weyl focused on painting in the French manner, "en plein air," or out-of-doors. He favored broad landscape views around the capital including the Potomac and Anacostia rivers and marshes, and the Virginia and Maryland hills.

In the catalogue accompanying "The Capital Image," the ground-breaking exhibition on the painters of Washington, D.C., the authors chose to represent Weyl's lifetime of work with a landscape similar to LOT 1509, POTOMAC MARSHLANDS WITH U.S. CAPITOL. In the selected catalogue image, VIEW OF THE CAPITOL FROM THE SOLDIER'S HOME, the sky dominates the upper two-thirds of the picture, and the foreground occupies the bottom third. The U.S. Capitol rises far off in the distance, just left of center. In both views of the Capitol, Weyl chose to emphasize the expansiveness of the landscape over the architectural presence of the city, reinforcing his association with the tradition of pure landscape painting and his standing with Washington Landscape School.
