Attractive W. Clauberg/Schuyler, Hartley & Graham Military Presentation Quality Sword with Scabbard Like many American sword merchants of the 1800s, the New York firm of Schuyler, Hartley & Graham would procure blades of appropriate regulation pattern from points abroad (Solingen, Germany being the source of many nice blades), and outfit/decorate the blade as needed, producing both standard military sidearms and fine decorative pieces worthy for presentation to an esteemed leader or colleague. While the exact history and date of production of this sword are unknown, swords of this type are known to have been carried by American officers during the Civil War and later 19th century conflicts. Measuring 38 1/2 inches overall, with a 32 3/4 inch double fuller blade, decorated with etched scroll and patriotic motifs on the lower half of both sides, "IRON-PROOF" on the spine, Schuyler, Hartley & Graham's New York address on the right ricasso, and Clauberg's trade mark on the left ricasso. The guard and pommel are constructed from sculpted and gold washed brass, with pierced-through scrollwork in the guard, a gold wire sword knot, and a one-piece silver plated grip with alternating smooth and vinework panels. The metal scabbard is nickel plated, with gold washed brass throat, suspension bands and tip, the bands and tip showing sculpted decoration and pierced-through scrollwork.

  • Condition: Fine, with a dent in the back of the grip, a slight bend in the tip, mild spotting on the otherwise very fine blade, 70% of the gold with a well aged patina on the exposed brass, and mild handling overall. The knot shows minor tearing. The scabbard is also fine, with some dings, an absent screw from the tip, and attractive detail in the brass.
