IMPORTANT CHIPPENDALE CHERRY TALL CHEST
New London or Norwich, Connecticut, Circa 1775
Deeply molded cornice flares over a frieze carved in a matchstick design. Case with a fan-carved central drawer flanked by four small drawers, with six graduated full-width drawers below. Bracket base with an unusual scroll-carved skirt and a pendant drop with carved tobacco moth. Old, probably original, surface. Brasses and oval escutcheons believed to be original. Pine secondary woods.

    John Walton, Griswold, Connecticut.
    Marguerite Riordan, Stonington, Connecticut, purchased after Walton's death. She notes he used it in his bedroom.
    Acquired from Marguerite Riordan, October 1987.

    Featured in a John Walton Inc. advertisement in "The Magazine Antiques", February 1977, p. 254. Walton notes it is "Unique, and probably the finest, tall New England chest known [...] The large shell in the upper drawer and the scrolling on apron are typical of the most elaborate New London County pieces.".
