Fine Grouping of American Aviation Medals and Memorabilia, Attributed as the Property of a World War II Second Air Commando Group Officer Per statements from the consignor, the contents of this group were procured from Colonel(ret) Robert L.F. Tyrrell of the U.S. Air Force in the 1990s, with a supplied letter from the Colonel describing his participation in the formation of the 317th Troop Carrier Squadron. Per the Colonel's narrative, he was part of the 317th cadre at time of activation in 1943, and served with the unit as a component of the 2nd Air Commando Group. Operating chiefly out of Kalaikunda, India, the 2nd provided a variety of support in the China-Burma-India Theater, from as fundamental as shifting troops and performing aerial resupply to dropping Gurkha paratroopers for the attack on Rangoon and Elephant Point, with Tyrrell serving as the operations officer for the squadron. Staying on with the Air Force after the war, Tyrrell's career included participating in the Berlin Airlift, provided transportation support for the Nuremberg Trials, served with Strategic Air Command and acted as Air Attache in Southeast Asia, retiring in 1970. The grouping includes a 17-language printed rayon "blood chit" (no serial number), two patches for the 379th Bombardment Wing, one patch for the 321st Bombardment Wing, embroidered CBI shield patch, two sets of silver aviator wings (one Royal Canadian Air Force, one American Senior Pilot), and a set of nine medals consisting of the Army Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, two Air Medals, Joint Service Commendation Medal, American Defense Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal; the Distinguished Service and Joint Service Commendation medals have Tyrrell's name inscribed on the back.
