Excellent World War I U.S. Remington Arms Model 1917 Bolt Action Rifle Dated to September 1918 on the barrel. The Model 1917 bolt action rifle is a descendant of the British Pattern 1914 Enfield, which was being manufactured by American firms to supplement British rifle supplies prior to America's entry into World War I. Once America joined the war, additional rifles were needed to supplement the then-standard Model 1903 Springfield, and the Pattern '14 was found to need minimal adjustment to meet the need; chiefly rechambering to standardize on the .30-06 cartridge and elimination of the volley sights. While numerically superior to the Springfield in American Expeditionary Force service, many 1917s were used to the point of destruction in the trenches, disposed of as surplus after the war, or broken out of stores and refinished early in World War II, making top quality examples manufactured during the war itself extremely scarce. As noted, the barrel is marked "R/flaming bomb/9-18", with "eagle head/16" and "eagle head/F25" proofs on the receiver, and "R" marks on the bolt handle and the tip of the stock. Fitted with a set of smooth walnut handguards and a grasping groove walnut stock with "eagle head /339" and "eagle head/300" proofs on the underside.
