Founded in 1981 by brothers Georges, Maurice, Armand, and Paul Marciano, Guess?, Inc. (styled as GUESS or Guess?) initially gained fame for its light, form-fitting denim jeans and iconic black-and-white advertising campaigns. The brand expanded rapidly into accessories and luxury lines like Marciano, while gaining pop-culture status through placements in films like Back to the Future. Following internal disagreements over distribution strategies, the company went public in 1996 to finance the buyout of co-founder Georges’ shares. Throughout the early 21st Century the retailer refreshed its image through high-profile global ambassadors and expanded its outlet and kids’ collections. In early 2026 the company returned to private ownership after a $1.4 billion deal led by Authentic Brands Group and the remaining Marciano brothers.
