Panniark Siusangnark (Canadian First Nations / Inuit, Repulse Bay / Naujaat, b. 1934). Disc number E3-515. Kneeling female figure. Soapstone sculpture, n.d. Signed in syllabics and disc number on underside of base. A carved soapstone figure of a kneeling woman by Panniark Siusangnark of Repulse Bay, the dark, mottled stone brought to a high polish that amplifies the figure's compact, rounded mass. From the front, a broad-shouldered female form emerges with quiet authority: arms curving inward to terminate in fisted hands resting against the thighs, and a head framed by two braids that fall to either side of a calm, simply rendered face. Size: 2.7" W x 6" H x 3.8" D (6.9 cm W x 15.2 cm H x 9.7 cm D)

Viewed from the rear, those same braids converge to suggest a long-beaked bird head with uncanny conviction, lending the figure a second identity that is perhaps less coincidence than intention, reminiscent of the transformational imagery central to Inuit spiritual thought, where the boundary between human and animal is a threshold rather than a wall. Siusangnark, born in 1934 and associated with the vital carving tradition of Naujaat, worked in the elemental idiom of mid-twentieth-century Inuit sculpture, where formal economy and spiritual depth are inseparable.
