William Spratling (American/expatriate in Mexico, 1900-1967). Produced by Sucesores de William Spratling. Pair of silver earrings, ca. 1979 or later. Each marked with Spratling hallmark and "TS-24" on verso. A refined pair of Mexican sterling silver clip-on earrings that carries forward the celebrated design vocabulary of William Spratling, their bold geometric form animated by subtle movement and quiet sound. Each earring presents a solid, architectural stud, its face incised with concentric right-angled channels, from which three slender oval rings hang free, swaying with the wearer to create a gentle kinetic effect. The design, first introduced in the 1940s, reflects Spratling's enduring fascination with Pre-Columbian motifs and modernist abstraction, translated into a play of mass against line, weight against air. Produced by Sucesores de William Spratling, the official Taxco workshop entrusted with continuing his models, each piece bears the Spratling hallmark and the "TS-24" mark to the verso, indicating post-1979 manufacture. William Spratling (1900-1967), an American architect and writer who settled in Taxco, is widely credited as the father of modern Mexican silver design. From his workshop, Las Delicias, he trained a generation of Taxco silversmiths and fused indigenous Pre-Columbian iconography with a clean, sculptural modernism, elevating Mexican silver to an internationally collected art form. After his death, Sucesores de William Spratling was established to continue producing from his original designs and dies; pieces from this later production are distinguished by marks such as "TS" prefixes, the "TS-24" here placing manufacture from 1979 onward. The suspended-ring motif, introduced in the 1940s, remains among the most recognizable expressions of his design language.
