This vintage hand-carved wooden duck decoy represents a black duck hen. The piece is constructed from two main components: a roughly carved body displaying prominent tool marks and a separately attached head with a smoother finish. The head is painted in a light tan or buff color with a characteristic dark horizontal stripe across the eye. The body is painted in a dark charcoal or black pigment. The underside of the decoy features a specialized construction consisting of a central longitudinal wooden keel flanked by twelve uniform, drilled circular holes designed for water ballast and weight adjustment. Hardware includes two rusted metal screw-eyelets, a metal clip, and a length of original fiber rigging cord wrapped around the keel. A blank, pre-printed identification tag is attached to the rear eyelet. No maker marks, brands, or signatures are visible on the exterior surfaces. The style and underside construction are consistent with decoys used in the Currituck Sound region, specifically resembling those associated with the Swan Island Club.
