Cameroon, . A prestige stool, Kom kingdom, Cameroon Grassfields, early to mid-20th century. Of sturdy cylindrical form, the rounded rim is studded with steel tacks forming a decorative border. The walls are carved in an organic openwork composition of interlocking curvilinear forms, enclosing a single convex orb, with additional tack accents throughout. The deep red-brown patina and confident, abstract carving quality are characteristic of Kom court woodwork, where stools served as primary markers of chiefly rank and ancestral authority. Single-piece construction. Size: 10.5”H x 11.5” diam. (26.7 x 29.2cm).

Provenance: Marshall & Caroline Mount Collection, NJ. Published and Exhibited: “A Cameroon World: Art and Artifacts from the Marshall and Caroline Mount Collection” 2007, pl. 54, p. 99., AHDRC no. 0009909.
