JEFFERSON AND ADAMS DECLINE JULY FOURTH CELEBRATIONS...ON THE DAY THEY WOULD DIE
A terrific newspaper, the Phenix Gazette, 2pp. folio, Washington, July 6, 1826. On page two, a letter of Washington Mayor Roger C. Weightman is published inviting past presidents and signers of the Declaration of Independence to Washington to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the signing of that all-important document. Following Weightman's invitation are printed the responses of John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Charles Carroll, James Madison, and James Monroe. Almost all of the respondents respectfully decline, but add the most patriotic and hopeful language to their messages, especially Jefferson, who praises the 'host of worthies' who signed the Declaration, 'in the bold and doubtful election we were to make for our country, , between submission and the sword...unbounded exercise of reason, and freedom of opinion...' Much more. Folds, light toning, else very good. Of course, Adams and Jefferson were both dead by the time this paper was printed - both passed on that anniversary, July 4, 1826.
