Taylor (or Tayler), Isaac (American, 19th century), Oil Drilling Scene with Derricks, Workers and Man on Horse (presumably the owner of the oil field), 1872, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, 27.5 x 36 inches, in an old wood frame 34 x 43 inches. Most likely a scene from the Pennsylvania Oil Rush in northeast PA around Oil City and Titusville. Provenance: The personal collection of Gary S. Grimes, Pittsburgh. Gary was an expert on Western Pennsylvania art, and especially the Scalp Level painters.

  • Condition: In fair condition, with a number of old repair patches on the verso, restored in 1995, visible stress marks from the stretcher bars.
