Nigeria, . A carved wood ceremonial bell, Eket peoples, Nigeria, early to mid-20th century. The columnar form is composed of stacked elements: a hollow cup-shaped resonating top, a schematic anthropomorphic face with minimal but defined features, and a series of ruffled collar rings above a bulbous lower body. The deep dark encrusted patina is consistent with long ritual use. Bells of this type functioned within Eket society and shrine contexts as signaling and prestige objects, their stacked compositional structure and schematic face characteristic of Eket ceremonial woodwork from Akwa Ibom State, southeastern Nigeria. Custom base. Size: 25”H (63.5cm).

Provenance: Ex. Helmut & Marianne Zimmer collection, Suisse. Ex. American collection. AHDRC no. 0172250.
