MEDAL OF HONOR LEGION CERTIFICATE FOR HERO IN ATTACK ON FORT FISHER
A most attractive and fine association partly-printed D.S. 1p. 23 x 18 in. [sight], Washington, Oct. 25, 1904. An appointment of Andrew J. Tomlin to the Medal of Honor Legion, signed by LLEWELLYN G. ESTES (1843-1905) Union soldier and MOH winner for his action at Flint River in Aug. 1864, during which he led troops in charge over a burning bridge; and ALEXANDER SCOTT (1844-1923) Union and MOH winner for his action in the Battle of Monocacy during which under a very heavy fire from the enemy saved the national flag of his regiment from capture. The recipient of this award, Andrew Jackson Tomlin (1845-1906) was a Union Marine who received the MOH for his actions during the 1865 assault on Fort Fisher. When the Confederates threatened to attack Tomlin's position, he remained and held the line until morning, when relief troops arrived from the fort. Thence, when one of his comrades was struck down by enemy fire, Tomlin advanced into an open plain and, defying a hailstorm of musketry, brought him to safety. Two paper medals affixed to each side and red paper seal at bottom, set into a vintage wood frame measuring 24 x 19 in. Very good condition, not examined out of frame.
