FINE PRIOR-HAMBLIN SCHOOL FOLK ART PORTRAIT OF A GIRL, oil on board, a charming example featuring a beautiful sitter wearing white off-the-shoulder gown adorned with pink ribbons and braided dark hair bearing jeweled hair pin and blue ribbons, subject identified verso as Margaret Van Slyke (1839-1917). Housed under glass in a modern frame. Probably William Matthew Prior (1806-1873). Circa 1850. 14 1/2" x 10 1/4" object, 17 1/8" x 12 3/4" OA.
Catalogue Note: Margaret Van Slyke (1839-1917) was born in Kinderhook, New York to parents, Tobias Van Slyke (1806-1873) and Charlotte Van Slyke (1804-1858). Margaret married Martin VanBuren Van Allen (1839-1917), a direct descendant of his namesake, in 1859, and the couple eventually had eight daughters. She is recorded in Hartford, Connecticut in 1900, where she and her family remained until her passing in 1917.
The present portrait is completely fresh to the market and survives in remarkably fine, untouched condition. Executed in William Matthew Prior's characteristic flat style, this portrait of Margaret Van Slyke includes several additional details that increase its desirability, such as the gold necklace, jeweled hair pin, and flowing pink and blue ribbons. See lot 2376 in the present sale for a pair Prior-Hamblin School portraits depicting Margaret's parents.
