WILLIAM G. FARGO
(1818 - 1881) American businessman who organized Wells Fargo & Co. and American Express, and later operated the Pony Express. Partly-printed D.S. 1p. oblong 4to., New York, June 14, 1869, a certificate for five shares in the American Merchants Union Express Company, signed by Fargo at lower right as president. Canceled May 23, 1872 with a punch hole and stamp. Very good. The American Merchants Union Express Company was formed on November 25, 1868, through the merger of American Express and the competing Merchants Union Express Company following a intense two-year rate war. Led by William G. Fargo, this combined entity stabilized the industry before renaming itself back to the American Express Company in 1873.
