War of 1812 State of New York Marked U.S. Springfield Model 1795 Type III Flintlock Musket Dated 1812 This U.S. Springfield Model 1795 musket from 1812 is a Type III variation with integral round iron priming pan and trigger guard with rounded end finials. Many of these muskets were rushed into service during the War of 1812 as the U.S. attempted to capture Canada and then shifted to fighting off the British invasion. This musket was supplied to the State of New York as signified by the "S.N.Y." stamped perpendicular to the bore on top of the barrel followed by "US" double stamped. The "P", eagle head, and "V" proof marks are on the let at the breech. The lock plate is dated "1812" behind the cock and is marked with the script "US" over the federal eagle and shield emblem above a curved "SPRINGFIELD" at the center. The buttplate heel extension is dated "1813". The barrel has a bayonet stud on top near the muzzle, and a brass blade front sight is on the rear strap of the front barrel band. Sling swivel studs are on the middle band and trigger guard finial. "US" is marked in script on the left stock flat.

  • Condition: Very good with attractive gray and brown patina, light oxidation and pitting, brighter areas under the barrel bands, and fairly mild overall wear, especially considering its age and period of use. The stock is also very good and has even dark oiled finish, general minor scratches and dings, and a chip and crack starting at the barrel tang. Mechanically functions. Overall, this is a very attractive example of the first official U.S. martial musket model dating to the "Second War of Independence": the War of 1812.
