Attractive Antique Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle in Highly Desirable .45-90 W.C.F. with Factory Letter Manufactured in 1889, this is an attractively configured special ordered example of Winchester's Model 1886 rifle, designed by the legendary John Browning, and chambered in the powerful .45-90 W.C.F. The included factory letter lists the rifle in .45-90 caliber with a part octagon barrel, plain trigger, half magazine, and "Lyman peep and beach" sights when received at the warehouse on 1 August 1889 and shipped the following day to order no. 24629. These rifles found widespread popularity in the American West, where they were highly regarded for their robust and dependable nature and hard-hitting power. It was also a favorite of professional hunters, particularly in the most powerful calibers such as .45-90 W.C.F., which was more than capable of downing essentially any large game in North America, as well as most other continents. This rifle has the attractive casehardened receiver that was standard on the model until around 1901. The top flat of the barrel has the two-line address and the caliber marking at the breech, while the model marking is on the upper tang, and the patent dates and serial number are on the lower tang. It is fitted with a Beach type combination front sight, an elevation adjustable No. 24 notch rear sight, and a Lyman combination peep sight mounted on the upper tang. It is mounted with a lightly figured forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.
