WILLIAM GAMBLE
(1818-1866) Union cavalry officer who led his column against the first elements of the Army of Northern Virginia at the outset of the Battle of Gettysburg, slowing the Confederate advance and buying time for the main Union force to prepare defenses. Promoted to Brigadier General shortly after war's end. Scarce war-date A.N.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Camp Stoneman, Aug. 23, 1864, to a paymaster at Washington, requesting that his correspondent issue four month's pay to the unnamed bearer of the note, as he requires it to send home to support his family. He signs ‘W. Gamble' in black ink at the conclusion, adding his contemporary rank ‘Col Comg Cavly'. Shows original mailing folds, slightly ragged at the edges where detached from a larger sheet, otherwise in very good overall condition. SOLD WITH: An immediately postwar partly-printed invitation, 1p. 8vo., Fairfax Court House, VA, June 9, 1865, from Gamble and his staff to U.S. Treasurer FRANCIS E. SPINNER (1802-1890), requesting his presence at the dedication ceremony of monuments recently erected at the Bull Run battlefield. Shows original mailing folds, with archival tape marks to the verso, otherwise in fine condition. Two pieces.
