A collection of eight (8) small copper cash coins from the British East India Company, recovered from the historic 1809 shipwreck disaster on the Goodwin Sands involving the EIC ship Admiral Gardner. Struck in 1808 at the Soho Mint in Birmingham using early steam-powered presses, these copper coins feature the East India Company coat of arms on the obverse and a Persian inscription on the reverse. The pieces exhibit typical saltwater patination and environmental wear from over 175 years on the ocean floor. Some of the paperwork accompanying this lot from previous owner implies that these coins were on the ship Apollo; the Apollo wrecked along with the Gardner, but was not carrying EIC coins at the time.
