AFTER ANDY WARHOL
New York/Pennsylvania, 1928-1987
Floral design, circa 1958.

Part of the group of floral silk textiles designed by Warhol for and manufactured by Balmoral Looms, Inc., New York, in the mid-1950s.
Floral pattern with blooms in shades of pink, yellow, orange, green leaves and black stems.

  • Provenance:
    Collection of Jack Schondorf.
Thence by descent to his daughter.

    Notes:
Warhol's textile designs for Balmoral Designs represent a significant yet long-overlooked chapter in the artist's early career. Produced in the 1950s before his emergence as a Pop Art icon, these repeating floral patterns display many of the visual strategies that would later define his mature work, including serial repetition, bold graphic simplification and an embrace of commercial production. Created for the American fashion and home-furnishings market, the Balmoral textiles bridge the gap between Warhol's celebrated career as a commercial illustrator and his groundbreaking fine art practice, making them among the most historically important survivals from his formative years.

These commissions were facilitated through textile entrepreneur and designer Jack Schondorf, who served as an intermediary between commercial artists and New York textile manufacturers during the period.
  • Dimensions: Printed silk, approx. 22" x 30".
  • Condition: Colors bright and fresh. Soft creases from having been folded. Scattered stains. Frayed along one edge. Two edges cut with pinking shears.

The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects.
