JAMES S. WADSWORTH
(1807 - 1864) Union brigadier general who commanded a division at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, mortally wounded at the Wilderness. A very interesting war-date A.N.S. as commander of the Military District of Washington, 1p. oblong 8vo., Washington, D.C., July 25, 1862, to a Mr. Wood, superintendent of the Old Capitol Prison. In full: ‘Mr & Mrs Brune will be allowed to see Mr Thos B. Barton directly during his confinement in Old Capitol Prison.' He signs boldly ‘Jms. S. Wadsworth' at the conclusion, adding his rank ‘B. G. Comg.' The verso bears the endorsement of a major, clarifying that Mrs. Brune will be allowed to spend a half an hour with her father, Barton. Shows horizontal and vertical folds with minute interior holes thereto, slightly ragged at the bottom edge and with archival tape marks to the verso, otherwise in very good condition. The original transmittal envelope is also present. THOMAS BOWERBANK BARTON (1792-1871) served as a Lieutenant during the War of 1812 and spent many years as the Commonwealth of Virginia's Attorney for Fredricksburg and Spotsylvania County. He was the father of Confederate brigadier general Seth Barton, and although the reason for his imprisonment in Washington is unclear, it likely resulted from his Confederate sympathies.
