1864 Burnside Patent fifth model saddle ring carbine, serial number 33694. Patent 1856 on frame just forward of block. Block and frame numbers match. Caliber .54 Burnside. Barrel measures 21" long. Initials JNC carved into stock. Two inspector cartouches on stock, one of them clearly GC (George Curtis), the other possibly EPR (Edwin P. Richardson), but the latter is largely illegible. The EPR attribution is based on the partially visible letters, which are most consistent with Richardson's cartouche versus any of the other known inspectors whose marks are found alongside Curtis' marks. History: According to the Burnside serial number database of Archival Research Group, there's a block of about 40 surrounding serial numbers (32778 to 34377) of recorded Burnsides, nearly all of them issued to the 2nd Illinois Volunteer Cavalry. We've spent quite a lot of time poring through Illinois cavalry rosters, and there are only about six candidates that could match the initials JNC (a few were disqualified because other sources revealed middle initials that were not a match). This item can be shipped in-house. Multiple lot combined shipping may require 3rd Party shipping.

Condition:
A very nice example. Stock and forearm have dings and wear from field use. Mechanically very fine. Nice, untampered-with finish, with no rust or pitting, not stripped or otherwise "improved." Clean and shiny bore.
