Yoruba, Nigeria, . Rare pair of copper alloy staffs, of matching form composed of a male figure seated and cradling edan ogboni in hands, supported by female figure below with a bird below each of their knees; the birds symbolize female power and witchcraft. Each figure is cast with bulging lentoid eyes, flanges at arms perforated for attachments, and exposed genitalia. Custom base. Members of the Oro society are reported to carry "ikuku Oro" staffs, each with two or three figures one above the other, when they escort criminals condemned by the Ogboni tribunal to their execution. - African Heritage Documentation & Research Centre.
