Near East, Persia, Qajar Dynasty, ca. 1789–1900 CE. A rounded fritware bowl rising from a low ring foot to a gently everted rim, its rotund body a canvas for a vivid garden in cobalt and turquoise. Over an opaque white ground, the potter painted a continuous register of gol-o barg (flower-and-leaf) motifs: lobed blossoms with radiating stamens spring from arching stems and lancet leaves, framed by lattice-like diagonals. A band of pendent turquoise tongues encircles the shoulder, bracketed above and below by crisp cobalt lines. The crackled glaze and warm earthen foot betray the siliceous stonepaste body beneath. Such pieces were domestic and decorative, prized by Persian families who collected glazed wares for the home, the saturated palette and rhythmic foliate scheme echoing a long Islamic tradition of botanical ornament. Size: 5.4" D x 3.6" H (13.7 cm D x 9.1 cm H).

Fritware, or stonepaste, was developed in the Islamic world to emulate the whiteness and translucency of imported Chinese porcelain. Its body blends ground quartz with small amounts of clay and glass frit, fired to a hard, pale matrix that takes underglaze cobalt and turquoise brilliantly. During the Qajar era (1789-1925), a strong appetite for collecting glazed ceramics took hold among Persian households, and workshops answered with jars, bowls, and tiles tailored to this domestic market. The gol-o barg vocabulary seen here, stylized flowers paired with curling foliage, belongs to a centuries-old repertoire that links Qajar production to its Safavid and earlier Timurid forebears.
