A fine late 19th-century cream-colored earthenware plate produced by Wedgwood, England. This piece is part of the celebrated "Mottoes from Chaucer" series. The well of the plate features a central black transfer-printed illustration of a water lily in full bloom alongside a lily pad. The upper rim is inscribed with the phrase "SO WHITE, SO SOFTE" in a stylized font, a quote attributed to Geoffrey Chaucer. The reverse features a circular transfer-printed mark depicting a profile portrait of Chaucer, surrounded by the legend "MOTTOES FROM CHAUCER / FIRST OF ENGLISH POETS." Additional markings on the underside include an impressed "WEDGWOOD" maker's mark, a small hand-painted brown decorator's cipher, a "RUBIN COLLECTION" provenance label, and a handwritten inventory tag.
