Very Scarce Early Production Antique Winchester Model 1895 Flatside Lever Action Musket with Desirable Stevens-Pope Barrel and Factory Letter Manufactured in 1896, this is a scarce early production example of a "flatside" Winchester Model 1895 musket. While Model 1895 muskets themselves are not necessarily rare due the large numbers produced to fulfill contracts for Imperial Russia during World War I, these early flatside examples are, with many having made their way south of the border and into the hands of both Mexican revolutionaries and Mexican federal forces during their revolution, many of which did not survive. This rarity is, of course, amplified by the fact that only approximately the first 5,000 Model 1895 rifles, carbines, and muskets were produced with the "flatside" receivers. The included factory letter lists this musket in .30 caliber when received at the warehouse on 2 October 1896 and shipped on 3 October 1896 to order no. 79846. This particular musket appears to have been utilized for NRA military repeating rifle matches, as it was fitted with a highly desirable Stevens-Pope barrel during the period of use, likely by H.M. Pope himself. Pope was a renowned gunsmith around the turn of the century and was highly respected in the target shooting community, and this particular barrel was produced during a short-lived partnership in the early 1900s between Pope and the Stevens company, during which Stevens offered these barrels in their catalogs as an option on various Stevens rifle models. The top of the barrel has the typical two-line Stevens-Pope marking and Stevens address, while the number "983" is marked on top behind the rear sight. The serial number is marked on the lower tang. The muzzle of the barrel is threaded for a device and it is fitted with a ramped and pinned beaded blade front sight, a military-pattern tangent rear sight, and sling swivels on the front barrel band and bottom of the stock. There is some bedding material visible near the breech of the barrel improving the fit of the forearm. It is mounted with a musket length forearm and straight grip stock with a military pattern buttplate.

The wood is very good with an empty oval cut on the right side of the buttstock that once held an inscription plate, some scattered minor chips, dings, and scratches. The hammer spring appears to be broken, otherwise the action mechanically functions.
