Catalogue Note: Jonas Marcuse was born on January 1, 1832 in Prussia (Germany) to parents Abraham Strelitz (1800-1891) and Jeanette Marcuse (1804-1874). Jonas immigrated to the U.S. in 1848 at age 16 and eventually landed in Richmond, VA, where he engaged in the mercantile business. On March 5, 1863, he married Rosalie Mitteldorfer (1847-1912), and the couple had at least four sons and one daughter. The family moved away from Virginia in 1869 and settled in Yuba City, Sutter Co., California where Jonas worked in mercantile and farming. There, he was elected as County Treasurer in 1872 and served two terms.
Some time after 1880, Jonas, Rosalie, and at least two sons came back to Richmond. In 1891, he and his sons became partners with Charles H. Hasker to establish Hasker & Marcuse Manufacturing Company, which manufactured labels and tins for selling tobacco. Jonas retired from active business several years before his death on November 14, 1914. At the time of his death, he was the oldest member of Beth Ahabah Synagogue as well as the Jefferson Club.
