East Asia, China, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A collection of carved elephant ivory figural sculptures, comprising a matched pair of large birds, likely phoenixes, perched atop branches, and mounted on a carved wood stand. Also included are four miniature horses and an ox on individual hardwood plinths, each rendered with fine naturalistic detail. The grouping is completed by a recumbent figure resting upon an open clamshell, from which a dragon or divine spirit (shen) appears to emerge - a motif associated with Daoist immortality and the transformative power of nature. Size of birds: 2.5" W x 6" H (6.4 cm x 15.2 cm); 7.5" H (19 cm) on included custom stand.
