Factory Game Scene Engraved Charles Lancaster 40 Bore Percussion Double Rifle with Case The maker’s records confirm that this rare rifle was completed in 1853 for the Marquis of Abercorn. Built with browned Damascus steel barrels featuring a low blade fore sight and a three-leaf (one standing, two folding) rear sight with gold centerlines on the matted flat solid rib, marked “CHARLES LANCASTER. 151. NEW BOND STREET. LONDON” and “PATENT SMOOTH BORED RIFLE” on the underside of the right and left respectively, period London proof marks, Lancaster "CL" barrelsmith mark, and two exposed ram-rod ferrules (one with sling eye) holding a rod with brass fittings and a worm. The patent breeches each feature a pierced platinum plug, an inlaid platinum line, and a shell and scroll engraving on the bridge between. The casehardened sidelocks display attractive scroll engraving with “C. LANCASTER/LONDON” marked ribbons on either lockplate and are fitted with blued safety catches. The furniture engraved en suite including pistol grip trigger guard engraved with a scene of two rutting stags on the guard bow, trigger plate with large pineapple finial, and hinged patch box cover engraved with a running stag and hinds. The rifle is fitted with a nicely figured straight hand half stock with raised cheekpiece, multi-point checkered grip and forearm, a blank silver stock oval, and rear sling button.
