Lynd Ward (American, 1905–1985) "God's Man" Engravings
1929, United States of America
Lynd Ward (American, 1905–1985)
Signed Gods' Man Three-Piece Engraving Set
Wood engravings on paper, from the celebrated Gods' Man series, 1929
A compelling three-piece grouping of wood engravings by acclaimed American artist and illustrator Lynd Ward, drawn from his landmark wordless novel Gods' Man. Executed in Ward's signature Expressionist style, the engravings feature dramatic black-and-white contrasts, bold carved lines, and powerful narrative imagery that convey emotion and story without text. Published in 1929, Gods' Man tells the Faustian tale of an artist who exchanges his soul for artistic success and is widely regarded as the first American wordless novel and a precursor to the modern graphic novel.
This signed three-print set exemplifies Ward's mastery of the wood-engraving medium and his innovative approach to visual storytelling. Rich in symbolism and social commentary, the works reflect themes of ambition, temptation, fame, and redemption that remain central to Ward's enduring legacy. His dramatic narrative prints have become increasingly sought after by collectors of American printmaking, illustration art, and early graphic literature.
